To celebrate the birthday of one of the most promising names in boxing right now, we compiled 5 things you probably did not know about Devin Haney.

1. He is the youngest professional boxer to have fought at the MGM Grand

Showcasing your skills in one of the most prestigious boxing venues is normally a huge career-high and something you tell the Grand-kids about. But Haney achieved this in only his fifth pro fight! Whilst most 17-year-olds were spending their Saturday’s on Xbox all night or getting drunk at house parties, this young champion was fighting on the under card of Manny Pacquiao VS Timothy Bradley. The fact that ‘The Dream’ was already breaking records inside his first year as a pro should tell you everything you need to know about the potential he has.

2. His amateur record reads like a cricket score

Haney certainly fits the trend of successful amateurs who perform well in the paid ranks. The birthday boy finished his amateur career with a reported record of 138-8 while boasting 7 national titles on top of that. The Californian-born broke another record as a 17-year-old and to no surprise it was because of his advanced skill set for his age. Haney became the youngest amateur to win the Youth World Championships when he fought in Reno in 2015. This brings us nicely on to our next fact you might not have known about the lightweight.

3. He is the youngest world champion in the past 23 years

No, we are not quite finished with Haney’s impact on the history books as a young pugilist. Only last year did he become the youngest world champion in recent time after the WBC promoted him from interim to world champion. The continuous record breaker has since defended this title twice, most recently against another amateur star in 38-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa.

4. He fought Ryan Garcia over 5 times as an amateur

It is hard to mention Haney without referring to his illustrious career in the unpaid ranks, especially when you realize, he went to war with fellow Lightweight and top contender Ryan Garcia several times. Young prospect and close friend of Haney, Otha Jones Ⅲ recalled in an interview with FightHype.com that, even though there were three rings in the arenas, when Garcia and ‘The Dream’ went at it everybody in attendance focused on that one. ‘KingRy’ handed Haney almost half of his losses as an amateur, winning 3 out of 6 with his rival taking the other half of victories. Some extensive history for a future mouth-watering clash.

5. The Mayweathers have trained him

This one may be a bit more obvious than the others giving the millions of views that the videos of Devin and Floyd Jr garnered earlier this year. However, it wasn’t just ‘Money May’ out of the Mayweather collective who has been keen to give the potential great some tips and tricks. Instead the whole ‘Money Team’ have given Haney a drop of knowledge about the game that he can use in his career going forward. From Floyd Sr, to Jeff to the late Roger, these legendary trainers have all given some invaluable experience to the 22-year-old on his way to the top and so far, he has been putting it to good use.
