USYK VS CHISORA – A SPOOKY AFFAIR

The fight that all boxing fans have apprehensively been waiting for since it was canceled in May due to the coronavirus pandemic, Oleksandr Usyk will go to battle with Derek Chisora on 31st October.

Targeting every world heavyweight belt, Usyk (the undisputed cruiserweight king) promises to overcome any challenge that arises as he continues on course for a WBO mandatory title fight with unified champion Anthony Joshua.

With a venue to be confirmed in the coming weeks, the bout will not be one for the faint-hearted.

“USYK IS A MACHINE. HE WILL NOT STOP” – Former world cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew

Undefeated in 17 professional fights, Usyk, a former Ukrainian Olympic Gold medallist, has risen to fame in recent years. ‘The Cat’, who outscored opponent Clemente Russo at London 2012, turned pro with an incredible 335−15 amateur record.

Signed by K2 Promotions (owned by the Klitschko brothers), the Ukrainian has won 12 of his 15 victories either by knockout or technical knockout. Beating the likes of Murat Gassiev and Bellew in 2018, ‘Olek’, a dominant champion, most recently defeated Chazz Witherspoon, who retired in his corner mid-fight – Usyk’s first heavyweight clash.

An unorthodox boxer, Usyk heads into battle against Britain’s Chisora as the strong favorite. Whilst the heavyweight division differs entirely from what the Klitschko prodigy is used to, the smaller southpaw will almost certainly stick by his often-patient tactics on Halloween.

On paper, the former lineal cruiserweight conqueror has nothing to worry about. In heavyweight boxing, one punch can change everything.

“NEVER UNDERESTIMATE CHISORA” – Former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch

Managed by David Haye, Britain’s Chisora approaches the Usyk fight as the underdog, having not fought since a fourth-round stoppage victory over compatriot David Price in October 2019.

Chisora should not be taken lightly. An experienced heavyweight, ‘Del Boy’ has 41 fights under his belt and has gone to war with some of the most famous names in the sport.

Beating former Olympian Carlos Takam, the 36-year-old has previously shared a ring at heavyweight level with Dillian Whyte (LL), Kubrat Pulev (L), Tyson Fury (LL), David Haye (L) and Vitali Klitschko (L).

As Alexander Povetkin proved against Whyte last month, a powerful heavyweight can turn the tide at the flick of a switch. Whilst based on records Usyk has a far superior history, some pundits believe that Chisora’s background will give him the upper hand.

“THIS FIGHT WILL TELL US A LOT ABOUT USYK” – Former British middleweight Matt Macklin

Beating only Witherspoon at heavyweight level, this fight will prove to the world if Usyk has the quality to compete properly in the division. Whilst the American caused few problems for Usyk, Chisora is a different bread of fighter completely.

The event’s delay would have been most welcomed by the Ukrainian, who has now had months to prepare for a new level of combat. Chisora, having trained at a similar tempo to his opponent during lockdown, claims that he is stronger than both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

THE BOXING GAME YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!

“Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte, and Deontay Wilder? No, they aren’t stronger than me,” Chisora exclaimed.

Usyk will prove his chin, stamina, and courage, almost certainly boxing with more intelligence, greater concentration levels, and with an awareness that has previously not been seen before.

An unbeaten ‘Olek’ must stop Chisora to remain mandatory for a bout with Anthony Joshua. With no crowd in attendance, it’s all eyes on the prize for both athletes.

“Many people say that Derek is a monster, but deep down he is a kind man. I don’t expect to see that good side of him.

“I know that he wants to break me, but I am water, wind, and fire altogether,” Usyk said.

“THE FANS ARE IN FOR A TREAT” – Former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion David Haye

Whilst fight fans will have no option but to watch the match-up from home, boxing lovers are still in for a treat. An old-timer versus the new kid on the block, a knockout is likely and an upset a possibility.
