With an exceptional amateur background that has translated to non-stop success in the pro game, birthday boy Artur Beterbiev has a chance to ingrain his name into the history books of boxing but it’s a race against time to do so.

The 36-year-old retired from an amateur career that boasted 295 wins and entered the paid ranks in 2013. There have been countless times where a professional prospect has been overbearingly hyped up due to their impressive background yet delivered results way shorter of what they promised. Beterbiev has thankfully avoided this pattern and, if anything, has delivered more than what was expected of him so far in his 15 fights.

As a unified light heavyweight world champion with a 100% KO ratio, nobody in boxing is doing it like this Russian is right now. His victories have a manner of dominance and superiority about them which have fans talking. Given that the right fights are made for him in the future, fans could still be talking about him years from now.

To date, Beterbiev has not put a foot wrong. It has merely been a case of lining them up and knocking them down regardless of the caliber of opponent. The former Olympian torn through once-undefeated fighters in Jeff Page Jr, Callum Johnson and most famously Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

His most recent victory against the latter in 2019 has been a career defining one and, despite his age, Beterbiev shows no sign of stopping there. The knockout artist will put over a one-year layoff of inactivity behind him by defending his titles against top 6 ranked German Adam Deines in March.  Although this is not a mega-fight that fans want to see Beterbiev in, it is an outing where the Canadian resident can remind every competitor at 175lbs why he is ranked number 1 by The Ring at this weight.

The light-heavyweight division is so closely associated with the man of Chechen descent, but it is disputed who the real champ is as another Russian in Dmitry Bivol holds the WBA Super world title. If undisputed honors are on the agenda for either men, which they should be, then time is of the essence to get the pair to lock horns as Beterbiev enters the back end of his 30’s today which will make many question his longevity in the sport.

THE BOXING GAME YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!

Courtesy of his performances, one of the hardest hitters in current boxing will have you fooled that he is in his pure prime at 36, decimating anybody put in front of him. Top contender Deines will challenge this foreboding character next, then the 17th fight may be an undisputed affair against Bivol or even a historic clash against former light heavyweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

Whoever future fights are against and wherever they are, it is guaranteed that Beterbiev will bring the smoke. A birthday is a time to celebrate though, so let us shift our focus from what might be to what has happened and reflect on a remarkable, undefeated journey so far.

Happy Birthday King Artur!
