Billed as ‘Heavyweight History’, Mike Tyson vs Larry Holmes was the ‘dream match-up’ for any 1980’s fight fan.

A Don King promotion at Trump Plaza, it took Tyson just four rounds to stop his fellow countryman with a trio of powerful knock downs.

Holmes, aged 38, was beaten by technical knockout at the hands of the most exciting 21-year-old on the planet.

Referee Joe Cortez had no choice but to intervene as Tyson, 17 years younger than his opponent, successfully defended his WBC, WBA and IBF titles.

Whilst ‘Iron Mike’ showed the ‘Easton Assassin’ little respect inside of the ring, there was always a touch of class between two of the sport’s most legendary names.

After beating Holmes and remaining undefeated, Tyson said:

“Larry Holmes was  legendary fighter, and if he was at his best, I couldn’t stand a chance.”

Despite losing for only the third time in his career (having been defeated by Michael Spinks in his previous two bouts), Holmes said:

“Tyson is a lot better than I thought, a lot better. People can talk about Spinks all they want. Tyson is the true champion.”
