On this day in 1994, billed at ‘The Uncivil War’, undefeated pound for pound stars James Toney and Roy Jones Jr, came head to head in one the most highly anticipated fights of the decade.

P4P number 2 and IBF Super Middleweight champ James Toney was the slight favourite over the P4P number 3 ranked Roy Jones. Only Pernell Whitaker was ranked above these two men at this time.

Jones Jr went on to dominate Toney in a one-sided affair at the MGM Grand in Last Vegas, putting on a masterclass performance to become the new Super Middleweight champ.

“I was already a world champion, but he was the boss, James Toney was ‘The Man’ at that time. I had to dominate him and that’s what happened. I annihilated the man, dominated him. That was my coming-out party, I showed all my weapons in that fight, I showed everyone, no, hey, this is what the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world really looks like!”
