A Historic Night for Women’s Boxing

This Saturday, one of the most historic boxing cards is set to take place when Claressa Shields (12-0) takes on Savannah Marshall (12-0) in London for the undisputed middleweight title of the world. Originally scheduled for September 10th, this fight headlines the card stacked with female fighters looking to make history as the first-ever all-female card at this scale. Following the success of the Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor fight in April, Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall will finally meet face to face after a heated build-up. The bitter rivalry results from their first meeting back in the amateur stage, where Savannah Marshall got her hand raised. Since that meeting, both women have amassed an impressive undefeated 12-0 record. Claressa Shields, who many consider the greatest woman boxer of all time, pulled no punches in press conferences and media duties in the lead-up to this fight, vowing to put her lights out and calling her win in the amateurs a “fluke”.

While only two of Shields victories have come via stoppage, her boxing skills are not to be ignored. The Michigan native has one of the most illustrious careers in women’s boxing, having won titles in three weight classes, two Olympic gold medals, and having a remarkable amateurs record of 64-1; there no questioning that Shields absolutely deserves to be in the conversation for the GWOAT as she likes to say. Make no mistake, her fight this Saturday will not be easy. Savannah Marshall deserves just as much recognition for her accomplishments in the ring. It’s not often female boxers get labeled as a knockout artists, but with 10 of her 12 wins coming via a finish, that is certainly a reputation that she has lived up to. The only woman to ever beat Claressa Shields in the pros or the amateurs, a repeat victory would solidify her status as one of the greatest of all time.

The fight itself is a great matchup. In the eyes of Vegas, the fight is even. Shields poses a sharp boxing threat with one of the best jabs in the game; Shields is the perfect example of a boxer who gets their shots in without taking any back. On the other hand, Marshall always has that knockout power that so few women carry in these weight classes. Her heavy pressure and ability to land her power punches make for one of the most dangerous fighters around. Also on the card, Alycia Baumgardner (12-1) faces off against Mikaela Mayer (17-0) for the undisputed super-featherweight crown, a fight fit for another massive main event. While this fight has flown under the radar because of the main event, Mayer and Baumgardner are some of the best in the game and have established reputations as people always down to fight. Mayer has already headlined multiple Top Rank events and looks to unify the division to become the undisputed champion. Carolina Dubois (3-0), the 21-year-old sister of heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois, also makes her return and looks to continue her career and add to her undefeated record. With two undisputed titles on the line, the history between these fighters, and the energy of the English crowd, this event will not disappoint and is a must-watch for boxing fans.
