Bowe VS Holyfield 2 took place 27 years ago today.

Their first fight was regarded as one of the best heavyweight title fights in history, yet their rematch could not have been more bizarre.

A much-anticipated rematch between then-undefeated Riddick Bowe and Evander ‘Real Deal’ Holyfield materialized on the 6th November 1993. After their first encounter went down in the history books, their 12-round return had a lot to live up to.

But both men brought their own firepower to the ring, suitably doing so the day after bonfire night, and displayed it from the first bell. These bells to signify the beginning and ending of rounds evidently had no effect on the pair in round 4 though as they launched combinations at each other way after the alarm sounded.

Holyfield kept that aggression going into the fifth and almost had the bigger Bowe on the floor before the halfway point of the fight.

Despite the fireworks both men set off in the initial, explosive six rounds. It was the 7th that stole the show and for the most unexpected reasons.

An individual, later identified as James ‘Fan Man’ Miller, parachuted onto the apron of the ring, and intruded on the ensuing war. Not only was it a completely random stunt that took everybody in the arena off guard, but it was also poorly executed as Miller got his parachute caught in the ring lights which sent him bundling back into the ringside crowd. This saw the Fan Man attacked by various displeased attendants who could get his hands on him.

21 minutes later, after his parachute was cut from the lights and this surreal situation was handled by security, the show went on much to the delight of the bewildered crowd. This 7th round proved to be the closest of the fight as one judge scored it a draw and the other two judges opted for either boxer.

Holyfield had the better of Bowe from there on out with late round flurries which resulted in him earning a majority decision win. The Real Deal cemented himself as the third boxer in history to regain his title by beating the opponent who he lost it to. Unfortunately for ‘Big Daddy’ this was the first and only loss of his career.

Although the parachuting pandemonium was at no fault of his own, it was no surprise that the incident happened at a Bowe fight as the New Yorker is no stranger to bizarre encounters in and outside of the squared circle.

The Ring Magazine highlighted the craziness that occurred that night by giving it the ‘Event of the Year’ title.
