This crazy encounter happened 29 years ago today.

Riddick Bowe faced an opponent ten years his elder in Elijah Tillery on the 29th October 1991.

The young and hungry Bowe went hunting for Tillery from the start of round 1 but, even after scoring a knockdown, it was what ensued after the opening three minutes that made for incredible TV.

The two boxers redefined fighting, with Bowe hitting his adversary with a jab after the referee signaled them to return to their corners. This was much to the dismay of Tillery who responded with a series of punches and kicks before Bowe exploded onto him pushing him against the ropes.

Bowe, in true Royal Rumble fashion, battered his opponent over the top rope with major assistance from his trainer Rock Newman who pulled Tillery out of the ring from behind.

When Tillery surfaced back into the now chaotic and busy ring, the Arena had learnt that he was disqualified for his kicks following Bowe’s cheap shot. This became official by the ring announcer when the pandemonium concluded in the ring between the corners, officials, and security.

Given the lack of sincerity in Bowe’s win, the pair ran it back which resulted in a TKO loss for the wannabe kick boxer.

This was not the last of Bowe and his team’s entertaining yet bizarre antics as they would go on to sucker punch Larry Donald at press conferences in 1994 and jump Andrew Golota in ’96 after receiving numerous low blows.
