On this day in 2012, Britain’s Anthony Joshua beat Italian Roberto Cammarelle to win Olympic gold in the super-heavyweight division at London 2012!

On route to his historic win, Joshua beat highly ranked Cuban Erislandy Savon in a close decision which set up a semi-final with 2008 Beijing Olympic silver medalist Zhang Zhilei. Joshua dropped his opponent in the second round to win by a wide margin and guarantee himself a bronze medal.

The final saw Joshua lose the first two rounds and was down by 3 points to the reigning Olympic champion Cammarelle. But Joshua showed his heart and grit to come back and take the final round to leave the result in the hands of the judges.

The scores were announced as a tie at 18-18 and so went to ‘countback’ which incorporates the scores of all five judges rather than just the median three. Joshua had edged it by three points to win Olympic gold in front of his home fans!

Speculation followed as to whether Joshua would go on to defend his crown at Rio 2016 but less than 12 months later, Joshua signed a deal with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn and the rest is history!
