Boxing’s most popular surname, a ‘Garcia’ bout could mean a variety of things. As Ryan Garcia takes one headline, Mikey Garcia steels another and Danny Garcia is all over the back pages.

So, who are the three Garcia’s of boxing?

Ryan Garcia

The current WBC interim lightweight champion, Ryan Garcia is ranked by the Ring Magazine as the third best active lightweight boxer on the planet.

An American 22-year-old with the world at his feet, ‘The Flash’ has already asserted his dominance on the global stage.

Signed by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in 2016, five years of hard work finally paid off for ‘KingRy’ when he beat Britain’s former Olympic gold medallist Luke ‘Cool Hand’ Campbell just two days into 2021.

Beating Campbell inside 7 rounds, a left hook knockout won Garcia his first ‘big time’ world title in Dallas, Texas (the WBC interim lightweight belt).

Now more famous than ever, Garcia has tempted one of the greatest of all time into what could be a legendary clash.

Garcia plans to jump two weight classes and take on eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao this year.

Pacquiao, who is 20 years Garcia’s elder, is now the WBA ‘champion in recess’.

Garcia has insisted that despite the age gap, the pair will be meeting under a traditional rule set.

“I’ll make it very clear. I am not fighting an exhibition,” Garcia posted on social media.

“I’m not stepping into a ring with nothing on the line. I’m fighting someone who I see as an inspiration and I’m coming to take the torch – 12 rounds with our records on the line.”

With a perfect undefeated record of (21-0, 18 KOs), Garcia, who was dropped for the first time in his career against Campbell, is also tipped to take on four-time super featherweight and lightweight world champion Gervonta Davis in the near future.

A huge year is on the cards and with youth on his side, it’s no wonder people are excited to see what the future holds for Ryan Garcia.

Mikey Garcia

A four-weight world champion, Mikey Garcia has previously conquered the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions.

The 33-year-old American began his career in 2006 and has since built a reputation for being a patient but hard-hitting fighter.

Undefeated until March 2019, Garcia with a current record of (40-1, 30 KOs) was seen to some as untouchable.

Having competed on three occasions in the last three years, Garcia’s most recent couple of fights are perhaps his best known yet.

Still fresh in the memory, Garcia lost his ‘invincibility’ when he challenged for Errol Spence Jr’s IBF world welterweight title in 2019.

The former Top Rank fighter lost ruthlessly to ‘The Truth’ in Texas. Overwhelmed by Spence, Garcia (who had moved up two weight classes) to take the fight, ended the bout blocking punches instead of throwing them.

Garcia had moved up from 135 to 147 pounds in his attempt to become a five-division champion. A unanimous judge’s decision resulted in a first loss in 40 pro bouts.

Recently bouncing back however, Garcia beat former welterweight world champion Jessie Vargas in Texas.

Back to winning ways, Garcia (146 lbs) overcame Vargas (147 lbs) by unanimous decision in February 2020.

Crowned the WBC Diamond welterweight champion, Garcia restored his reputation as a winner against ‘The New Generation’.

Prior to Ryan Garcia taking the Manny Pacquiao bout, rumours suggested that ‘Mikey’ was the next ‘Pac Man’ opponent.

With those rumours failing to come to fruition however, the future remains unclear for the Californian born boxer.

Danny Garcia

A former two weight world champion, Danny Garcia has ruled as the unified WBA (Super), WBC and Ring Magazine lineal light welterweight champion.

Nicknamed ‘Swift’, the 32-year-old American (who was also the WBC welterweight king), is ranked as the world’s sixth best active welterweight by The Ring.

A U.S. national champion as an amateur, Garcia turned professional in 2007 and has since won 36 of the 39 bouts he’s competed in (36-3, 21KO’s).

Losing for the first time in his career against Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman in 2017, Garcia has recently fallen to defeat at the hands of Shawn Porter in 2018 and joined Mikey Garcia in being stopped by Spence Jr in December of last year.

Losing to ‘The Truth’ by unanimous decision in Texas, Garcia will hope to re-kindle a spark and climb back to the top of Welterweight boxing.

With famous victories over the likes of Amir Khan and Robert Guerrero firmly in the past, the focus is firmly on the future for Garcia.

Rumours suggest a possible re-match with Thurman this year. Other sources speculate that Garcia could next step back into the ring with Regis Prograis as his opponent in 2021.
