A boxing bobby, PC Lloyd Walton restores law and order on the streets of Warwickshire by day and encourages youngsters to steer clear of gangs, crime and drugs with the not-for-profit youth boxing club that he runs in his spare time.

Joining the force in 2000, Walton, a boxing enthusiast from an early age, wasn’t always the real-life super hero that he is today.

Growing up on a tough council estate, the police officer was removed from mainstream education as a child and almost ended up on the wrong path.

The now role model explained to Coventry Live how boxing changed his life.

“I have been boxing for 35 years, my grandad got me into boxing, what worked for me, I hope works for other people,” he said.

“I could have really gone the other way, boxing stropped me getting into too much trouble.”

Inspired by his own story, Walton opened the Warwickshire Police Boxing and Fitness club in 2019. Aimed at offering young people the chance to choose the straight and narrow path in life, the ABC regularly welcomes over 40 members who all learn from the 37 years of experience under amateur boxer Walton’s belt.

With sessions open to boys and girls as long as they have a parental consent forms signed, Walton explained the importance of the work he’s achieving alongside both Warwickshire Police and North Warwickshire Borough Council.

“There are issues with anti-social behaviour, minor criminality and drugs,” Walton said to Coventry Live.

“They start off with a bit of weed and before you know it, they are county lines dealers.

“Before I left Nuneaton, I took three weapons from kids, it is frightening the way it is going.

“It has given us a health respect for each other, some of these kids have no role models, they don’t go to school, they have no aspirations, they are blind to the world.

“They are left to their own devices, but they can come to us and get discipline, aspiration and respect.”
