Roger Mayweather 1961 – 2020

In tough times, this week we reflect on the life of ‘The Black Mamba’, better known as Roger Mayweather – Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and trainer.

Passing away aged 58 after years of ill health, the former super featherweight and light welterweight champion played a monumental part in his nephews’ incredible career. Touching on experience from winning 59 of the 72 professional bouts that he competed in, there was a wealth of knowledge to be taught.

Born into a boxing family, Roger’s reptilious nickname reflected the stealthy and dangerous kind of fighter that he was. Facing names such as Julio César Chávez and Pernell Whitaker whilst in the ring, an impressive CV helped convert a successful competitor into an even better trainer.

Stepping into Mayweather Jr’s corner in 1996, the Michigan-born American put aside a 20-year long career and began to make history with his nephew. Under his guidance from 2000 to 2012, Mayweather Jr became one of the biggest names in sport and a pound for pound legend.

Pivotal in an unbeaten ‘Pretty Boy’ fight career, the pair went on to conquer the likes of Ricky Hatton and Oscar de la Hoya when on their way to the top – ‘Money’ eventually retiring a five-weight world champion.

As the boxing world mourns such an icon, tributes have poured in from around the globe. From boxing royalty, to devasted Mayweather fans, the once two-weight world champion and late trainer extraordinaire will forever be looked back on as a legend.

Floyd Mayweather Jr Tribute

“Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing,”

“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring.”

“Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr, my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us.”                                                                                                        ______________________________________________
