Boxing legend Hector Camacho tragically passed away eight years ago today.

An entertainer, a serial winner and a naturally talented fighter, ‘Macho’ was a world champion in three different weight classes.

Holding the WBC super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight world titles, the Puerto Rican southpaw is unquestionably an all-time great.

Winning three New York Golden Gloves as an amateur, Camacho’s professional career was iconic.

Never shying away from the biggest and baddest names of his time, ‘Macho’ twice defeated Roberto Durán and even knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard, sending him into permanent retirement.

Coming to blows with the likes of Julio César Chávez, Félix Trinidad, and Oscar De La Hoya, Camacho was fierce in competition – win or lose.

Whilst controversial outside of the ring, ‘Macho’ won respect from his performances within it.

From his first world title fight against Rafael Limon in 1983, to his last against Perry Ballard in 2008, an incredible 30-year career will always be defied by the famous victories against those most treasured in boxing.

Retiring with a 79-6-3 record, a flamboyant Camacho never lost by knockout! A hungry, focused, and dedicated boxer, ‘Mucho’ was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2016.

From his colourful trunks, to his breath-taking speed and agility, the boxing world was saddened to learn of a life taken far too soon in November 2012. Camacho caught up in a fatal shooting aged just 50.

In over three generations of boxing, the only opponent who Camacho simply could never beat was himself. Despite his wit, humour and charm, ‘Mucho’ often struggled when the gloves were off, all to frequently unable to adapt with life in the fast lane.

Whilst by no means a role model, the Puerto Rican is best remembered for his vibrancy, ability and unique personality.

A showman at heart, the ‘Lightweight Muhammad Ali’ was truly one of a kind.
