Happy Birthday to the unified welterweight champ Errol Spence, who turns 31 today. When looking back, it’s  nothing short of a miracle he survived and recovered from that devastating car crash in October 2019.

But he is still thriving at the top of the welterweight division, most recently outpointing Danny Garcia to retain his unified titles. ‘The Truth’ has what others want at 147lbs, ‘others’ including Keith Thurman who has been vocal about making a fight with the 31-year-old in the near future. Manny Pacquiao is an all time great that Spence has also been rumoured with, however since being stripped of the WBA belt, new titleholder Yordenis Ugas has come to the forefront of next-fight talks.

Spence didn’t take a tuneup opponent on his comeback fight but instead beat contender Danny Garcia, so he should now be looking for the bigger names & fights that are available.

A super fight with Terence Crawford is the fight on everyone’s lips, which is a huge unification fight and would go down as one of the biggest welterweight fights ever. It’s unlikely this will be next though as there is still scope to build this fight up even more and potentially make it a fight for all the belts, delivering an undisputed welterweight champion. There are also doubts from both fighters about this match-up which is a massive obstacle. While Spence cannot see this blockbuster ever happening outside of 2021, Crawford believes he doesn’t need to fight his rival for his legacy. Fans can only pray the boxers change their attitude about what would be a once-in-a-generation fight.

The other unification option is a match up against 34-year-old Ugas. The Cuban got promoted by the WBA to the ‘Super world welterweight champion’ position on the 29th of January this year after it was stripped from Pacquiao due to inactivity. Ugas has had four losses out of 30 career fights, his most recent loss came when fighting for Shawn Porter’s WBC belt, the very same one that Spence took later that year. Both fighters have had close scraps with ‘Showtime’ where one edged it and the other was not so lucky. But this adds value to what would be a tough test with high reward for the birthday boy.

It’s great to be talking about these potential matchups knowing Spence is fully recovered and should be out putting his titles on the line again this year!
