Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz Preview

Will Leo Santa Cruz become the second Mexican-born quintiple champion in boxing history, or will it be Gervonta Davis who prevails, keeping his record unblemished and maintaining his hype?

This Halloween, Premier Boxing Champions has the sweetest candy on the street, giving us a mouth-watering clash between Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz who will be defending each of their respective belts.

Mayweather promotions’ biggest asset currently holds the WBA strap at Lightweight which is only one half of the belts that the victor will be leaving with on Saturday night. His Mexican-born adversary holds the WBA world title but 5lbs lighter at Super Featherweight, a possession that he will be wanting to retain in one of his toughest matches to date.

Although Davis is putting his 135lb belt on the line, the fight is billed as a Super Featherweight contest so he will be competing at 130lbs despite notoriously struggling to make the lightweight requirements on the scales.

Floyd Mayweather’s prodigy has been here before though, knocking out Jose Pedraza for the IBF title before moving on to conquer 135lbs. The contracted weight does benefit his opponent a lot more as Cruz has been on a tear since beating Carl Frampton in a rematch to win world honours in this division.

The 32-year-old 4-weight world champ is the naturally smaller fighter and the less powerful of the two. However, he does not rely on this aspect of his game as his 19KO’S in 39 fights would suggest. Instead he focuses on outpointing opponents with fast, front foot flurries. Cruz’s ability to maintain a high output in the later rounds has been the vital difference in previous outings so he will be banking on doing the same to a drained Davis to win this weekend.

‘Tank’ on the other hand is a knockout artist with only one of his 23 fights coming by decision. He has been taught how to time his incredible power punches from the masterful Mayweather which has been the front door key to his success so far.

Both warriors being very offensive is what gives this fight of the year potential. If Davis wants to stay undefeated then he will have to stop Cruz in his tracks with sharp counter-punches we often see in his work. The bookies see this route being the most realistic one, favoring Davis by KO.

Personally, I think ‘Tank’ is now a proven champion, although this is the most challenging fight of his career, I believe it is one he can overcome. He knows how much his power will threaten the lighter Cruz and will look to utilize that early on as it’s a recipe for disaster hanging around in the late rounds with someone so ferocious.

CHECK OUT THE GREATEST MIDDLEWEIGHT KNOCKOUT ARTISTS EVER!

If it does go the distance, I can only see it being because Cruz countered Davis’ power with his combination punching and did so consistently enough to win himself later rounds. This, to me is unlikely though and I would put my money on the Baltimore banger finishing his rival off before the 8th.

We are being spoilt by brilliant matchmaking in the latter stages of this year, as the dust settles on the Lomachenko VS Lopez drama, another whirlwind of anticipation and excitement is drawn up with this Superfight clash.
