Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr

Turning back the clock, boxing fans will be treated to a rather unusual spectacle on Saturday night.

Former world heavyweight champions Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr will go head to head in an exhibition fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the rules stricter than ever before for the 50-year-old athletes.

The two men who have great respect for one another. Jones Jr is the only boxer in history to have worn the world heavyweight crown having begun his professional career at light middleweight level. Tyson conquered heavyweight boxing when aged just 20.

The motive behind the bout has raised questions. There is concern for the health of both men, but very little for the amount of money that this bout will generate over the course of eight rounds (should it go the distance).

THE BOXING GAME YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!

Andy Foster, the Executive Director of the California State Athletic Commission (which is safeguarding the event) said:

“I wanted to have their assurances that they understand. I don’t care if they spar. I don’t care if they work. They are world-class athletes, even still.

“They have a right to earn. They’re about the same age.

“We can’t mislead the public as to this is some kind of real fight. They can get into it a little bit, but I don’t want people to get hurt. They know the deal.”

The restrictions placed on Jones, a four-weight world champion, and Tyson, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet,’ are that there will be no knockouts or cuts allowed.

There will be no judges and no winner. Due to it’s exhibition nature, no one will be officially scoring the points.

Experienced referee Ray Corona will make sure that there’s no blood spilt. A cut means that the fight is immediately over.

“If you get cut, it’s over,” Foster told both athletes.

Both gentlemen will be forced to use 12oz gloves. The 12oz gloves should offer more protection than the 10oz gloves used by modern day professionals.

“They’re going to spar hard, but they shouldn’t be going for a knockout,” Foster explained.

In both of their careers, the two boxers combined have won by knock out on 91 different occasions.

UFC President Dana White, suggested that should the chance present itself, neither man would opt out of knocking down the other:

“They’re not allowed to knock each other out? How do you enforce that? I’d like to bet that doesn’t happen. Can you bet on that?”

Each round will last two minutes, and you will not be able to place a bet. With no official winner, the bookies are not entertaining any form of gambling.

The twist to the tale is that Triller, the US broadcaster for the fight, have insisted on a winner being confirmed, knockouts very much welcome.
