Multiple reports in the boxing world claim the former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is set to step aside and allow the undisputed clash between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to go ahead. Wilder is reportedly demanding $10 million and a guarantee that he will face the winner of the undisputed mega fight.

Wilder, who is currently recovering from a bicep surgery which he suffered during his one-sided loss to Fury back in February, has had plenty of time to reflect during the Coronavirus pandemic. This would be a sensible decision for the Bronze Bomber as not many right now give him a chance against Fury in the rematch. In addition, he would earn an extra payday without having to fight, give himself more time to prepare, and potentially set up an even bigger fight further down the line.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who represents Tyson Fury and mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev doesn’t see the idea working, “To talk about paying Wilder or paying Pulev step-aside money is at this point ludicrous. I mean, we are not the United States mint, that can print money and distribute it – you know, $2 trillion, or, you know money hard to imagine. We can’t do that. Who’s gonna pay the step-aside money? I mean, where’s it coming from? It’s nice to say, ‘Hey, pay step-aside [money].’ Who the hell is gonna pay it? Right? So, you know, let’s look forward to a Fury-Wilder fight, a Joshua-Pulev fight.”

An undisputed clash is what the fans want, the boxing world hasn’t seen an undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis 20 years ago and it’s no more than the fans deserve. Where this leaves mandatory challengers, Kubrat Pulev, Alekandr Usyk & Dillian Whyte is unknown and complicated as these men equally deserve their shot at the big time, but they may have to wait a little longer.

If the decision comes down to Tyson Fury – the rematch will go ahead as planned. Earlier today on social media, the Gypsy King told fans “I am not paying him money to step aside, I’d rather take his scalp again. I’ll beat him in the ring and get him out the way. I wouldn’t pay him $2 million to step aside, I’d rather give him another battering!”
