With WBC champion Deontay Wilder expected to defend his crown against Tyson Fury next February and a host of mandatory obligations to fulfil for Anthony Joshua – it seems the boxing fans will have to wait a little longer to see who becomes the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

According to promoter Eddie Hearn, Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev (28-1) is the favourite to be AJ’s next opponent, who’s only defeat has come at the hands of Wladimir Klitschko.

The IBF told Sky Sports prior to Joshua’s rematch with Ruiz Jr, that they expect their mandatory challenger Pulev, to receive his chance first. “The organisations have agreed that the IBF mandatory would be next.”

Pulev took to social media quickly after Joshua’s win “I want to congratulate AJ and Eddie on regaining the title and look forward to facing AJ in his next bout, as the IBF has ordered”

WBO President Paco Valcarcel announced immediately after the rematch that Joshua has 6 months (180 days) to fulfil his mandatory obligation against number 1 contender Usyk. However Usyk, who is still essentially untested at heavyweight, has stated he is willing to compromise is position as the WBO mandatory by fighting Dereck Chisora at the o2 Arena in February, which could make for a bigger fight down the line with Joshua.

Promoter Eddie Hearn believes April or May is a realistic date for Joshua’s next fight (potentially back in London), which could mean they are forced to vacate one of the belts.

Who do you want next for AJ? Have your say!
