Boxing Guru pick out 3 of Sugar Ray Leonard’s best knockouts for you to watch & enjoy below…

1. vs Andy Price, 1979

Fighting on a stacked card televised by ABC from Cesars Palace and promoted by Don King. The line up included Roberto Duran vs Zeferino Gonzalez, Wilfred Gomez vs Carlos Mendoza for the WBC Super bantamweight title and headlined by Larry Holmes vs Earnie Shavers for the WBC world heavyweight title. Sugar Ray (24-0) began the fight measured and composed before spotting his opening and unleashing rapid combinations pushing Price back onto the ropes. Within seconds the fight was over following a flurry of lefts and rights crashing Price down to the canvas with eight seconds left in the first.

2. vs Dave ‘Boy’ Green, 1980

Leonard now 26-0 and defending his recently claimed WBC world welterweight title after a thrilling encounter with Wilfred Benitez, stopping him in the final seconds of the 15th and final round. Green, a legitimate contender having previously fought for a world title was seen more as a ‘keep busy’ fight for Leonard and was the only Britain Sugar Ray faced in his glittering career. Leonard remembers the left hook shot which ended the fight in round 4 as perhaps the most beautiful punch he ever threw.

3. vs Donny Lalonde, 1988

Leonard (31-1) now aged 32 and a 3 division world champion was making another comeback after 19 months out of the ring. This time, for Donny Lalonde’s WBC light heavyweight title and the newly created WBC Super middleweight title which meant that the fight was controversially made at 168 pounds. Leonard struggled with Lalonde’s size and awkwardness and was dropped for only the 2nd time in his career in the 4th round. In the 9th, Lalonde gave Leonard more trouble, but he was able to use his experience to manoeuvre away from further attacks and recover brilliantly to counter and win the fight.
