The majority of us this year have had to endure rather than enjoy. However, there were moments in the ring that captivated all of those tuning in, helping fans who have struggled throughout the year forget about the chaos and immerse themselves in the ecstasy of boxing.

CHECK OUT THE GREATEST BOXING COACHES

  1. Gervonta Davis scores the knockout of the year.

Mayweather Promotions’ poster boy Gervonta Davis upped his stock when he squared off against four-weight world champion Leo Santa Cruz on October 31st. ‘Tank’ laid claim to the WBA Super World Super Featherweight & Lightweight titles that were on the line as he caught his opponent with a horrifying uppercut in the 6th round. Davis was looking to tee up the shot all night and caught his Mexican adversary with it on the back-foot a few times before he slipped the right cross and landed it flush. Santa Cruz was knocked out on impact and slumped to the floor, inducing roars of shock and elation from the 9,000+ socially distanced spectators in the Alomodome arena. Floyd Mayweather’s prodigy could be heard screaming “I’m the man” at the top of his lungs soon after, adding to the pandemonium. The game former champion thankfully regained consciousness and rose to his feet moments later. Although he was on the receiving end, Santa Cruz contributed to the knockout of the year and goes down with Davis as the third best boxing moment in the last 12 months.

  1. Tyson Fury wins the WBC World Heavyweight title.

A story for the ages. A case could be made to have labelled Tyson Fury VS Deontay Wilder 2 as one of the most highly anticipated rematches in recent history. The build-up was everything you expected it to be with two charismatic, proud pugilists vowing to decapitate each other. The aggressive outcome Fury was predicting was subversive to his typical defensive & clever boxing style. The usual style was nowhere to be seen come the 22nd of February as ‘The Gypsy King’ willed into existence everything he spoke of in the press conferences, bulldozing then-champion Wilder. The 7th round proved to be the final one of the fight. Going into it, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ had officially been knocked down twice and looked disoriented from his damaged equilibrium. Fury soon closed the show by pouring it on his rival in the corner, forcing Wilder’s trainer to throw in the towel and concede defeat. It was history in the making as the newly crowned champion rejoiced with his team and loved ones who entered the ring. Many UK fans in attendance made themselves heard more than ever before and celebrated one of Britain’s, and 2020’s, most special boxing moments.

CHECK OUT THE GREATEST LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT KO ARTISTS EVER!

  1. Teofimo Lopez becomes the King of the Lightweight division.

Admittedly, it is incredibly cliche, but it is not wrong to write that Teofimo Lopez dared to be great on October 17th. Due to the agenda of governing bodies, the 23-year-old cannot officially call himself the undisputed lightweight champion. However, his victory over the former unified phenom Vasiliy Lomachenko establishes him as the top dog at 135lbs. The magnitude of the result would have had every fan in attendance on their feet in support of Lopez achieving the unthinkable, but he had to party with a smaller crowd due to the pandemic forcing proceedings behind closed doors. The Brooklyn-born boxer took his career-defining opportunity with two heavy hands, outworking Lomachenko for the majority of the twelve rounds. Sheer delight followed from Lopez when his hand was raised, in the form of his signature back-flip and understandable waterworks. No doubt he captured the hearts of every fan watching through their screens. Even if you were rooting for the Ukrainian great on this historic night, you cannot help but feel happy for a man accomplishing such a feat at such an age. Takeover complete.
