I’ts been reported for a while now that Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz are interested in fighting and according to Mike Coppinger, the pair are in advanced discussions for a fight in the summer. Both men are promoted by Al Haymon so it should be easy enough to get the deal done which is expected to land on PPV and would be the toughest test to date for both men.

It’s still unclear what weight the fight will be held at, which is a huge factor in this fight. Santa Cruz moved up and won the vacant 130-pound WBA title at the back end of last year, whilst Tank won their vacant 135-pound title shortly after. It’s well known that Gervonta struggles to make weight – he was stripped of the IBF junior lightweight title back in August 2017 when he was overweight ahead of his fight with Francisco Fonseca. He failed to make weight on his first attempt before he fought Hugo Ruiz in February 2019 and was initially overweight in his last outing against Gamboa.

Davis posted an unofficial poster of the match up on his social media yesterday and although many fans are excited about the potential bout, some are disappointed. If the fight goes ahead at 135 pounds, they feel Davis will be too big and bully Santa Cruz, who has never fought at the weight and only boxed up at 130-pounds once in his career.

Leo Santa Cruz would be aiming for his 5th division title if it’s confirmed at 135, although his preference would be for the bout to be held at 130. The 31 year old sent out a word of warning to Tank, “Stay out of trouble so we can get the fight made, let’s make it happen!” The 31 year old’s New Year’s resolution was to get the Gervonta fight in 2020 and that now looks set to happen. Although confident of beating Gervonta, he was well aware of the threat Tank poses, “I’m going to work on my chin by sparring with bigger fighters in the 140-pound division… we have to be very, very careful not to get caught with Gervonta’s big punches.”

Virgil Ortiz had his say on the matter, “130 – Leo [wins], 135 – Gervonta [wins]” – who you got? It’s safe to say if the fight does go ahead we can expect fireworks and there are plenty of great fights available at lightweight for the winner!
