In the past week, we have witnessed more beef between young prodigy Ryan Garcia and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. Garcia says he rejected an offer for a July 4th bout because he was offered ‘only’ $200,000 which he deemed unacceptable.
“That’s bullsh*t. Why am I being held back financially? What is the problem here? Why is DAZN giving out big numbers to guys fighting nobodies? It’s f*cked up right now how I’m being treated. I’m not asking for $100 million. Just give me the check I deserve. How am I one of the biggest fighters in the world and I get bigger paychecks outside of boxing? You had Shakur Stevenson fighting. Why is ESPN going and not me?”
Boxing rival Gervonta Davis was eager to respond to the news;
“200k?????? He needs that money back from him buying that Ferrari…stop trying to keep up broke boy!”
Ryan Garcia clapped back at Davis by replying;
“Yeah, I get endorsement deals outside of boxing, something you don’t know about because you hit women.”
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya made an announcement on Monday via Twitter;
Due to Team @KingRyanG decision not to accept a July 4th bout, we will now return in late July with the future of boxing ? @vergilortiz, more exciting details to follow @GoldenBoyBoxing.
Clearly a public dig at his fighter, Garcia responded with a tweet of his own, which he later deleted;
“You do realize you’re supposed to be my promoter, not hater right?”
Goldenboy’s Eric Gomez pointed out that the world is in the middle of a pandemic, there would be no fans in attendance at this event and Garcia’s ‘gate is significant’. “It’s arguably the worst financial downfall since the Great Depression… But he wasn’t asked to take a pay cut. In the contract that we recently signed, we were going to pay him above his minimum for this next fight.”
Fans around the world were quick to have their say…
@Timmyb_1803, ‘Go to Mayweather promotions bro’
@Lennoxtyson, ‘Ryan Garcia rejects 9 out of 10 fights Oscar offers him. I understand his frustration.’
@Oldskool_boxing, ‘De La Hoya acting like his arch-nemesis Dana White trashing his fighters. Does not surprise me at all.’
@Narkynarc_, ‘He hasn’t been tested. Nobody knows his full potential because he hasn’t stepped up to fight Linares. $200K for a fight like that might sound like it’s not worth it, but dude needs to silence the haters with his resume.
