On This Day in 1995, the boxing world saw one of its most fearsome characters in Mike Tyson return to the ring.

The former undisputed champion took on the lesser known Peter McNeely and, even today, faces criticism for this choice of opponent. However, even though the boxing levels were evidently acres apart, Tyson was re-entering the ring after a four year layoff. No matter what they accomplished previously, you wouldn’t see any boxer in any era of the sport take on a 50/50 fight after such a long break. Just look at the man who was named after ‘Iron Mike’ in Tyson Fury, who fought against unknown opponents at the start of his emphatic resurgence to the top of the heavyweight division.

Through his career, the prodigy of Cus D’amato had to balance living up to his potential in the ring and avoiding trouble out of it. However Tyson was unable to do the latter as he was convicted of rape in 1992 despite his plea of innocence before and after serving three years in jail. This sentence is what saw the Brooklyn boxer out of action until he came to blows with Peter McNeely 26 years ago.

Tyson was already a formidable individual in boxing so the fact that he was coming back to the sport after serving jail time added fuel to the intimidating flame, all the while fans bought into his menacing demeanor and savored the entertainment.

This sinister persona was not just heard in the interviews but also seen in the ring, especially in this instance, as Tyson dropped an aggressive McNeely twice within 89 seconds of the first round which forced the manager of the ‘Hurricane’ to step in and stop the fight.

Not the usual conclusion to a heavyweight boxing contest, but the unusual was almost expected during Tyson’s crazy career.
