On this day in 1975, one of the greatest and most brutal fights in history took place live from the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City of the Philippines.

Promoted by Don King, the Thrilla in Manila began at 10:45 am to cater to the American audience. The fight was watched by a record global television audience of 1 billion viewers.

It was Ali’s 4th defense of his WBA & WBC titles which he had taken from George Foreman 12 months earlier in the Rumble in the Jungle.

In the build-up to the fight, Ali verbally abused Frazier which he later claimed was an attempt to promote the fight and increase the gate.

His famous rhyme boasted that the fight would be “A killa and a thrilla and a chilla, when I get that gorilla in Manila.”

Frazier responded, “It’s real hatred. I want to hurt him. I don’t want to knock him out. I want to take his heart out.”
