A legendary British clash between champion Lennox Lewis and future champion Frank Bruno took place in the Cardiff Arms Park on this day in 1993.

This was dubbed ‘The Battle Of Britain’ and it was the first time in boxing history two British boxers featured in a world title fight.

Lewis’ newly acclaimed WBC belt was on the line and he faced the game challenger Bruno who was attempting for the third time to taste world glory.

The Hammersmith-born’s hunger and desire to be third time lucky in his endeavor was apparent to everyone watching the fight. Nobody expected for Bruno to look as good as he did in the seven rounds that he lasted with Lewis, at the time of the stoppage, two of the judges had it even and the third had Bruno ahead.

The champion, in his first title defense no less, was not to let go of his belt easily and his punching power was remarkable even for Bruno’s chin. A left hook landed flush in the seventh which began Bruno’s demise, a few more power punches and the referee called a halt to the contest to let the one-eyed challenger live to fight another day.

Luckily he did so as Bruno became successful in his fourth title shot just two years after this loss, beating Oliver McCall for the very WBC belt he challenged for in this historic fight.
