King Callum Walsh: Dana’s Next Golden Boy

Live on UFC Fight Pass from the Agganis Arena in Boston, Massachusetts, undefeated Irish star Callum Walsh improved his perfect record to 6-0 with an emphatic stoppage over late replacement Wesely Tucker late in the 2nd round. The fight itself was total domination: brutal and calculated. In the first round, Walsh showed no desire to feel out his opponent and went to work early. It was the body shots that did the damage, as at the start of the second round, Tucker was visibly exhausted. Round 2 saw Callum shift up a gear, relentless with his bodywork; it was a swift left hook that led to the first knockdown of the night. Two more knockdowns later, it was over at 2:59 in the second round. In his fifth stoppage, Callum Walsh showed exactly why he is headlining cards at such a young age.

Most impressive about the 22-year-old is his maturity and confidence. After his fight in the ring, when asked if anything concerned him with the late replacement, he answered very simply, “It doesn’t matter who. Tell me where and when, and I’ll be there.” Callum Walsh has had a very unique start to his boxing career. At only 6-0, Walsh has amassed a large following due to UFC president Dana White. Fighting on UFC Fight Pass tonight, a subscription streaming platform, Dana White and the UFC social media team have pushed Walsh since the start of his career. Dana White could be seen sitting ringside for his performance tonight, a big deal considering the massive PPV event in the promotion he runs goes down this upcoming Saturday.

When asked about what it meant for Dana to be his biggest supporter, Walsh responded, “Everything he does, everything he touches explodes. Adding, “there’s a reason why I’m the main event… you’ve seen what I’ve done out there.” Not many fighters are scheduled for a 10-round main event in their 6th fight. With Callum Walsh, the sky’s the limit; with his next fight already booked for June 9th in Los Angeles, Callum maintains he wants to stay as active as possible. Surrounded by his family and his loved ones in the locker room after the fight, one thing is clear. This was just another day in the office for him. The only goal is to be at the top of the sport.

In the co-main event, former title contender and Boston boxing legend Danny O’Connor made his long-awaited return to the ring after five years. At 30-3, this fight was a must-win with implications for the future of his career. Donning an outfit in tribute to his fellow firefighters In front of thousands of cheering fans, Danny O’Connor put on a vintage performance over Californian Luis Garcia (13-1-1). The Massachusetts native picked up right where he left off, landing sharp combinations to the body and head of Garcia. A perfect straight punch landed for O’Connor 2nd round, opening a cut on the bridge of a tough Luis Garcia. With more of the same in the 3rd round and 4th, Garcia had no answer as the doctor eventually waved the fight off after several pauses in the action to look at the cut; a performance that had the home crowd roaring.

After his fight, O’Connor made one thing clear; he wanted a world title. Interviewed in the ring post-fight, O’Connor stated, “This is the best I’ve ever felt… I’m ready to fight tomorrow”. With more performances like that, Danny O’Connor may find himself in the running at 147 pounds sooner rather than later.

Also on the card televised by UFC Fight Pass, Boston native Francis Hogan put on a show for the home fans as he forced a tough Jimmy Williams to retire in the corner after the 5th round. While a cut was opened under the eye of Hogan in the 4th, Hogan didn’t let that bother him as he continued punishing Williams both to the body and the head. Jimmy Williams was unable to continue the fight, and his corner informed the referee the fight was over. Hogan improves his record to an impressive 14-0 with his 13th stoppage.

The two fights opening the card saw Kendrick Ball Jr., now 20-1-3, take home a lopsided decision in a tough 6-round bout against a very game Mike Stegall. Stegall, undefeated at 7-0-3 entering the fight, landed heavy hooks throughout the contest but couldn’t win over the judges. Undefeated Hegly Mosqueda improved his record to 24-0 after a split-decision victory over Jose Edgardo Garcia. The fight was fairly one-sided, with Mosqueda never seeming to be in danger. The split decision came as a shock to the crowd as well as to Mosqueda.
