Exclusive interview with Jason Fowler

Rising the ranks as a manager in the boxing world

Boxing Guru had the pleasure of sitting down with Jason Fowler, the founder of ESEMG, for an exclusive interview. Fowler has worked in the sports and entertainment business for the last 17 years, and recently has been building an impressive stable of boxers. One of his biggest recent additions is Montana “Too Pretty” Love, who fights this weekend as the co-main event on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol card. These types of fights are exactly what Fowler strives for when it comes to his clients, and recently he has been getting that goal accomplished.

ESEMG is a Sports and Entertainment management firm specializing in guiding the careers of Professional Athletes and Entertainers within the entertainment and sports world. ESEMG has offices in Los Angeles, CA and Dallas, TX. Their mission statement highlights exactly what the intentions and goals are for the group.

“Where others see complexity, we see possibility. With instincts and knowledge from over 17 years of experience. We’ve got the right blend of brains, contacts, and creativity to predict, produce, and perform for some of the world’s best athletes and celebrities throughout the entertainment world.”

Fowler started his management career with clients in multiple fields of entertainment. His list of clients includes, Producer/Actor Donnie Wahlburg, Country Artist Uncle Kracker, Olympic gymnastics icon Kim Zmeskal, Chicago Bear and University of Oklahoma defensive end Tommie Harris, artist Christian Davis, and artist Jimmy Mowery.

When it specifically comes to boxing, Fowler first got into the fight game with welterweight Zab Judah. The multiple time world champion was the first boxer to give Fowler a chance. Originally from Northbrook, Illinois, Fowler told Boxing Guru “I have always been a fan of boxing, I remember watching boxing with my dad as a kid. Boxing has really been a breath of fresh air compared to the music side of entertainment.”

The next big time client Fowler manages is former two division world champion Devon Alexander. Alexander “The Great” held the unified WBC and IBF light heavy weight titles in 2010, and IBF welterweight title from 2012 to 2013. Fowler and Alexander have built a strong relationship from day one. Fowler has high praise for Alexander, “Devon is a great guy, from a family standpoint to a ring standpoint, and being an ambassador for the sport. He’s a phenomenal boxer and even better person. I consider him like family, he is one of those guys you really want to be around.”

Building those family- like relationships is a big part of what ESEMG and Fowler pride themselves on.” I want to remain true to who I am, I want to have good relationships with all my clients”. Fowler has gone as far as opening up his home to some of his clients. While he admits that not every client is going to become a superstar, he does his best to make sure his clients are good overall people outside of their profession.

His personality and networking skills have helped him build up his stable of clients. Specifically in the boxing world people love to talk. Undefeated super bantamweight Hector Valdez Jr. (15-0, 8 KO’s) is one of Fowler’s top boxing clients. It was Valdez Jr. who introduced Fowler to women’s flyweight Sulem Urbina (12-2-10). After speaking at a few of the Golden Boy Promotions events, Fowler signed the marketable Urbina. When asked about her new manager, Urbina said “Jason is a kindhearted, genuine man. People talk really positive about him. You know how people in boxing like to talk. Jason is one of the good ones, I’m excited for this new partnership. I think he truly believes in me, and that’s something I really need right now, a team that has my back fully”.

The fact that the client and the manager both have mutual praise says a lot about the management style of Fowler. Finding that middle ground of personal versus professional relationships can be challenging, but Fowler and ESEMG are taking that head on.

Fowler had this to say about his recent signing, “She is a great young lady who has had some bad breaks lately. She has a great story, her brother and her coming up in the sport together. She is one of those people that you love to support. She is a free agent when it comes to promotion groups, we hope to get her signed with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom and get her back in the ring in June”.

Next up in Fowler’s stable of fighters is rising star Montana “Too Pretty” Love.

Montana Love is a professional boxer signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. Montana is from Cleveland, Ohio and has a professional record of 17-0-1 (8 KO). Montana is a fighter who in the boxing world is considered “fan friendly” meaning when he steps in the ring, he is coming to give the fans a great show. Montana is constantly giving back to his community in his hometown and wants to make sure to make just as big an impact in where he came from as he does in the ring. Montana is a future star for the sport of boxing in the making.

This Saturday Love will fight for the IBF North American super lightweight title in a matchup against Mexican fighter Gabriel Gollaz Valenzula. Love’s popularity is rapidly increasing after his dominant win against Ivan Baranchyk on the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley undercard.

When discussing his budding relationship with Love, Fowler had this to say about his client’s big opportunity.

“Check out the irony of this, Mother’s Day is the Sunday after the fight. Both of our mothers have passed away recently. So, after Montana wins the belt on Saturday night, by the time we get back to the hotel to celebrate, it will be Mother’s Day on the east coast. I really think what has transpired with our relationship, I really think the stars are aligning for this one moment. It will be a great celebration for the two of us”.

Look for Love to put on a show in front of the pro Mexican crowd in Las Vegas. At the weigh in, the fans booed the entrance of Love. The added motivation will only add more fuel to the fire for Love and his team. Fowler told Boxing Guru “after the win against Valenzula the next fight will be something special”. He even hinted that “Too Pretty’s” next fight could be overseas in what would be an electric atmosphere.

THE BOXING GAME YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!

Fowler has developed a great relationship with Golden Boy Promotions, specifically top matchmaker Robert Diaz. Fowler had these words to describe that relationship.

“Robert Diaz from a personal standpoint is someone who I have the upmost respect for. I really look at him as someone I can go to for anything. He is somewhat of a father figure to me. He is one of the best matchmakers in the game, he is straight to the point, and will tell you how it is”.

He currently has Hector Valdez Jr. signed with GBP, and previously managed James “Crunchtime” Wilkins who was promoted by GBP throughout a portion of his pro career. Recent signee Sulem Ubrina was also promoted by Oscar De La Hoya and GBP.

Fowler also works very closely with Hector Beltran who trains rising welterweight star Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Hector Valdez Jr. Beltran has great insight when it comes to fighters and their ability inside of the ring. The combination of Fowler and Beltran is a solid one-two punch of business and skill of the sport.

“Me and Hector Beltran are starting to do more and more together. I trust him 110 percent, he see’s things differently when it comes to inside the ring. I look forward to working with him for years to come.”

To round out Fowler’s stable of fighters is Figo Rameriz out of Dallas, Texas. Figo earned a first round KO victory this past April in his professional debut. The 19-year-old uses a combination of speed and power and had a solid amateur career. Both Fowler and Beltran have high hopes for the young flyweight.

ESEMG and Jason Fowler are always looking to add talent to their resume. They currently have five fighters on contract and will continue to add clients whenever they see the right fit. The combination of hard work, networking, and building strong relationships will take this team to the next level.

Make sure to tune to DAZN to catch Montana Love in the co-main event this Saturday on the Alvarez vs. Bivol card. Expect entertainment from the walk-in all the way to the final bell for “Too Pretty” Love.

Fowler has done a tremendous job building up his stable of fighters and look for that progress to continue. Boxing Guru and @rinsidemike appreciate the time and look forward to seeing where the road takes ESEMG and Jason Fowler.
