Promoter Eddie Hearn has announced ambitious plans to overcome the Coronavirus pandemic by hosting Fight Night events in his 15 acre garden at Matchroom HQ!
The promoter’s plans are expected to cost somewhere in the region of £1 million which consists of utilizing a local hotel where testing can take place, building changing rooms, and a ‘gladiatorial’ venue with a full canopy.
Hearn is looking to put on fights taking place on 4 straight Saturday’s across July & August and explained, “Financially this will be painful for us but after the momentum we have worked so hard to build over the past 10 years, I’m not going to let boxing just dribble back. While other guys go with arenas and empty studios, ours will look very different,”
The first night of action is set to begin with unified world champion Teri Harper taking on Natasha Jonas in an all British showdown. And the last finishing with the number 1 WBC mandatory challenger, Dillian Whyte against the dangerous Russian, Alexander Povetkin which was originally due to take place on the 2nd of May.
“Just imagine it. It is summer, the house is all lit up, you can see Canary Wharf in the distance and fireworks are going off. Then over the hill walk Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin for a massive tear up on my lawn. – World championship boxing in my garden? Oh, go on then!”
There are a lot of difficult obstacles to overcome but with UFC’s Dana White hosting a successful event last weekend (UFC 249) which headlined with an unbelievable fight between Tony Fergusen and Justin Gaethje – it’s only a matter of time before others follow suit and Hearn is leading the way in boxing.
Hearn’s plan is said to be at an advanced stage so finger’s crossed for boxing fans, we may have world championship boxing back in 6 weeks time.
