New British Super-Lightweight Champion Dalton Smith flawless against Sam O’maison
Flawless. The performance Dalton “Thunder” Smith turned in against Sam O’maison this weekend echoed why so many believe Dalton Smith is the future of British boxing. With a dominant showing that ended in a sixth-round knockout, the 25-year-old Sheffield native improved his undefeated record to an impressive 12-0, with ten of those wins coming inside the distance.
The fight started slow and calculated for Smith, stalking O’maison and peppering his opponent with stiff jabs and a mean right hook to the body. As the fight continued, Smith showed the home crowd exactly why there continues to be so much hype around him. While aggressive and powerful, the standout from this fight was how sharp Smith looked. Landing clean rights on O’maison’s chin and temple repeatedly, culminating in a perfect three-punch combo to sit O’maison down early in the third. Two more rounds of domination would see Smith up five rounds to none heading into the sixth. As tough as O’maison was, fighting through the blood pouring down his face, a perfect straight right hand landed for the undefeated fighter, sitting O’maison down for the second time with half a minute to go in the round. While O’maison managed to get up to his feet, one final right hook to the chin sat him down for the last time before the bell could ring. A punch-perfect performance from an apparent future star.

So, what makes Dalton Smith so good? Admittedly, there is a massive gap between Sam O’maison and the world-level 140-pounders. However, Smith showed his skillset in this fight. Smith was sharp, quick, and powerful. His combinations to the head and body could put anyone off, add his excellent counterpunching ability, and Smith has all the tools to become a real problem. Against a game southpaw, Smith came out nearly untouched, a far cry from the man who stood opposite to him. While ‘Thunder’ has quite the way to go before a world title shot, very few prospects look as good as Smith did with his performance tonight. With the backing of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, don’t be surprised when Dalton Smith reigns supreme in the 140-pound division in years to come.
