Here is our update on the Joshua V Fury situation from one year ago today. Since this had been posted, the fight has been confirmed with a date and venue (August 14th in Saudi Arabia) and then cancelled due to Deontay Wilder’s arbitration case that demanded a trilogy fight with Tyson Fury. It is borderline comical to see how little progress has actually been made between then and now, when mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk was seeming to stall the undisputed fight a year ago, now he is almost certainly Joshua’s next opponent. Still, halfway through 2021, it seems the boxing world has as much confirmation for this historic heavyweight clash as they did halfway through 2020.

The biggest fight in British boxing history has been agreed according to promoter Eddie Hearn. He announced this afternoon heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have agreed on a 2 fight deal to be held next year to finally crown the undisputed heavyweight champion.
“We’re making great progress, there’s still a lot to overcome. We are looking at venues and dates. It’s fair to say that, in principle, both guys have agreed to that fight. Two fights”.
Tyson Fury confirmed the news via social media moments later, explaining first he needed to deal with Deontay Wilder in his next fight and then will go straight into the Joshua fight in 2021.
Fury’s comments conflict with what Eddie Hearn stated in regard to the WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte. Hearn said, “We have the Dillian Whyte mandatory which is due before that fight”. This would mean Fury would first face Wilder then Whyte and finally Joshua. Whyte has held the number one spot in the WBC rankings since 2017 and has been promised a shot at the title by president Mauricio Sulaiman by the end of February 2021.
As previously reported, an added complication lies with mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk who is due a shot at Joshua’s WBO heavyweight title. Clearly there is still a long way to go before things are tied up and finalized, but boxing is back on the lips of fans after no action in 3 months and we can expect some blockbuster fights to come in the next 12 months!
