Can Callum Smith avenge his brother by beating the face of boxing?

BOOK CANELO vs SMITH ON DAZN

Smith looks to defend his WBA ‘Super’ world Super Middleweight champion status against an opponent who would be anyone’s toughest test of their career.

The pair will have both been out of action for over a year by the time they come to blows tomorrow night. This highly anticipated match-up almost materialized earlier this year to the delight of the fans but a certain Coronavirus unfortunately delayed proceedings until now.

Saul Alvarez has recently become a free agent after splitting with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions and has since enjoyed his freedom by pitting himself against one of the three champions in the Super Middleweight division. A clash with technically talented IBF champion Caleb Plant was heavily speculated to happen but somehow fell through only for the Mexican to go after a former World Boxing Super Series winner instead.

This is a fight that runs much deeper than a title defense for ‘Mundo’ though and any lurking animosity against BoxingGuru’s P4P number 1 can be dated back to 2016. This was the year where Callum’s brother Liam Smith was laid to waste by ‘Canelo’ for the WBO Super Welterweight title.

So, aside from all the other accolades that comes with beating a boxer as prestigious as Alvarez, Smith will be looking for retribution when he steps through those ropes in just over 24 hours.

But how is he going to avenge his brother exactly? It seems that sticking to his strengths will be the only way the Scouser can stop Alvarez’s rampage and declare himself as the Top Dog at 168lbs.

Smith stands at 6’3 inches, the tallest opponent of note that ‘Canelo’ has faced which causes some uncertainty for the smaller man. Success could be found if the Brit opts to keep busy with his jab and stick and move around the ring, making it harder for the former Light Heavyweight champ to plant his feet and hit the target.

However, questions will be asked for how long ‘Mundo’ would be able to keep up this physically demanding style of boxing as he is going into the biggest fight of his career without a full training camp.

This leads into my prediction that Alvarez will use his world class head movement to slip the jab, closing the extended distance that Smith will be looking to establish. When in the pocket, Alvarez will look to work on the body overtime in identical fashion to what he did against Callum’s brother. As the old-timers would say, this will take the air out of the tires and if the undefeated champion fatigues then he will start to open up which, by then, is game set and match for a powerful and precise Alvarez.

THE BOXING GAME YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!

The whole of the UK will be behind the Merseyside man in hopes he can defeat someone recently made to look beatable by beast Gennadiy Golovkin. Any fight that ‘Canelo’ is part of is always a must-watch spectacle. This showdown will be no different, capping off what has been a streak of exciting fights over these past few months and determining who the King of the Super Middleweights really is.
