A record breaking 63,000 fans fitted in the New Orleans Superdome to watch Muhammad Ali’s final victory on this day 43 years ago. This came in a rematch against Leon Spinks, brother of multi-weight world champion, Michael.

In their first encounter, Spinks pulled off one of boxing’s biggest upsets by defeating ‘The Greatest’ via split decision in only his eighth professional fight. ‘Neon Leon’ had a whirlwind couple of years from 1976-1978 as he went from an Olympic gold medalist to undisputed heavyweight champion.

The rematch only saw the pair fight for one belt though as the WBC stripped Spinks as champion after he opted to share the ring with Ali again instead of taking on hall-of-famer and mandatory challenger Ken Norton like the organisation demanded.

That decision may have been regretted by the brief champion as Ali beat him with a well-executed game plan to win by unanimous decision and become the first ever three-time heavyweight champion in boxing.
