Morris East made history on this day in 1992 with his 11th round KO of Akinobu Hiranaka which The Ring magazine awarded as the knockout of the year.

This was a career defining win for East because, not only did it earn him this award, but it also saw him claim the WBA super lightweight title and in turn become the youngest Filipino world champion at 19 years old. The latter record is still yet to be beaten

This was not an easy fight for the challenger though as he faced Hiranaka in his home country of Japan. The champion also beat none other than Edwin Rosario for the title, a Puerto Rican who tops my hardest hitting lightweight list.

The young East dared to be great though, and rose to the challenge regardless of how intimidating it was. His stiff lead hand dropped the Japanese champ in the 11th round to etch his name into boxing history.
